Biology Degree | Biology Program | Biology Major

   Fall 2009 Newsletter

The Biology program at York College prepares students for careers in fields such as environmental science and biotechnology, for professional programs in medicine or other health-related fields, and for graduate study in biological sciences. We offer a variety of courses for both biology majors and non-majors.

Classes geared toward the biology major include Biology I and II, which prepare students for more advanced classes taken in the sophomore through senior years. The diverse range of upper division electives allow students to concentrate on either molecular or organismal biology. These electives include Biology of Microorganisms, Immunology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Zoology, Animal Behavior, Plant Systematics, Marine Ecology, and Evolutionary Biology. As a part of the liberal arts curriculum at York College, all students are expected to take at least two lab science classes. Options for students not majoring in biology include Field Natural History, Biology of Animals, Microbes: Unseen Life on Earth, Freshwater Ecology, Marine Biology, and Oceanography.

PROGRAMS IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Biology
"The science of life" offers exciting and challenging opportunities in the study of molecular and organismal biology, in the lab and in the field, using advanced technologies and hands-on experience.

Secondary Education
Want to teach Biology in high school? The Secondary Education-Biology program prepares students for certification as secondary education biology teachers.

Allied Health
These innovative programs provide a foundation for growing fields of medical study. By combining up-to-date techniques and instruction with clinical experience, these programs prepare you for some of the most in-demand careers in health care, such as nuclear medicine technology and respiratory therapy.

Premedical Studies
Medical schools typically prefer students with a well-rounded education combining science (including biology) and non-science courses as opposed to students from any particular major. York College pre-med advisors will help you to follow your own interests, do well in college, and thus be competitive for entrance into the medical school of your choice.
