Behavioral Sciences

The Behavioral Sciences provide exciting opportunities to study human behavior and to apply these studies in fulfilling everyday human needs. At York College, programs offered by the Behavioral Sciences Department are designed to prepare students for a variety careers within the social and behavioral sciences as well as for graduate study in these and related fields. The Behavioral Sciences Department emphasizes high quality educational and experiential learning opportunities. Students are encouraged to extend learning beyond the classroom, and they are supported in identifying opportunities for internships, participation in faculty research, and volunteer projects. Each student works personally with a faculty advisor who is accessible, interested and eager to help with any issue related to their college experience.

 

MAJORS IN BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES

Students who major Behavioral Sciences pursue careers in industry, social service, and government.

Behavioral Science
This applied skills degree program offers four areas of concentration: Human Services, Applied Social Research, Urban Studies and Gerontology.  Prepare for careers or graduate studies in fields that require understanding and positive development of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

Criminal Justice
Gain a broadly-based perspective of local, state, and national law enforcement and criminal justice systems as you prepare for an exciting career in law enforcement, probation and parole, corrections, and the courts or to attend graduate school. The program emphasizes the theoretical and practical underpinnings of criminal justice and the helping nature of the field’s professions.

Psychology
The study of human behavior and thought processes is the foundation of the profession of psychology. Students in this program study concepts including perception, cognition, emotion, personality, and relationships, and learn to apply what they learn to issues related to family life, education, work, mental health problems, and more.

Recreation and Leisure Administration
Helping individuals, families and organizations make the most of time away from work is the basis for an exciting and interactive career in Recreation and Leisure Administration. Students in this major choose either a Community emphasis or a Therapeutic emphasis.

Sociology
Sociology is the science that examines social groups, categories, and society as a whole using statistical analysis and other forms of research.  Students in this major seek to understand the nature and workings of human group life in order to address problems and affect positive change.
