Academic Departments
English and Humanities
The ability to write and speak with clarity and grace, to understand times and cultures other than our own, to appreciate the sources not only of institutions but also values and beliefs, and to explore the human experience in all its richness and ambiguity: these are the objectives of the English and Humanities Department, and they may be applied not simply to a single profession or vocation, but to the whole range of human endeavor.

Our academic programs are designed to prepare students for careers requiring analytical, presentational, and communication skills; pre-professional preparation for positions in publishing, law, state and federal service, and commerce; and admission to graduate and professional schools. The Department embraces language-centered disciplines concerned with human values and experiences, and the oral and written interpretation of texts.

Students who major in English and Humanities learn to ask meaningful questions, think critically, analyze data, synthesize information, and communicate ideas clearly and convincingly.  Graduates of our programs are recognized for their versatility, flexibility, and ability to learn and apply new concepts.
