1. Is there a lot to do at York College?

With over 70 clubs and organizations at York, there are plenty of activities for students to get involved. Some clubs and organizations include:

Dance Team
Fraternities & Sororities
Rugby
Student Senate
Ski and Outdoor Club
The Spartan (campus newspaper)
WVYC (campus radio station)
York College Players (a theatre organization)

Organizations can also plan activities surrounding any of the many theme weeks throughout the year. Athletic events whether they are intercollegiate or intramural will also draw crowds.

2. How's the food?

York College provides a variety of meal plan options that will satisfy any picky eater. At the same time, the College understands the importance of good food and every effort is made to provide quality, value and assortment of food options every day.

At the Johnson Dining Hall, you can select from a wide variety of comfort food, vegetarian and healthy food options, grilled entrees, salad bar, deli, pizza, pasta, soup and home baked goodies. If you need something on the go, check out the Spart's Den, Campbell Coffee Cart, Pura Vida Café or the Courtside Café for pizza, pasta, sandwiches, wraps, salads, soup and snacks.

With all these options, you are sure not to go hungry! All students who live in campus residences are required to purchase a meal plan.

3. Is a personal computer required?

Although freshmen are not required to bring a personal computer, many York students find it beneficial to have their own. All residence rooms offer full network and Internet access. There are numerous hot spots for wireless connectivity all around campus.The Information Technology Department is happy to assist students with PCs or Macs. For those students who choose not to bring a computer to college, there are over 8 general purpose computer labs and 22 academic specialty computer labs for their use.

4. Can freshmen have cars on campus?

Yes, freshmen may bring their cars to campus. Campus Safety will issue a parking permit for a fee of $50 for the academic year.

5. What public transportation is available out of York?

Rabbit Transit has a bus terminal in center city York. AmTrak passenger service operates out of Lancaster and Harrisburg. There is also an international airport in Harrisburg along with a limousine service available to Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Check out the ride board located in the Iosue Student Union.

6. What is the security like at York College?

York College has 24-hour security for its students. There are emergency call boxes throughout the campus along with a campus escort service. In addition, the department operates the West Campus Shuttle which transports students between the main and west campus from 7:00 AM to 9:30 PM, Monday through Friday. The neighboring police departments of York City and Spring Garden Township also patrol York's campus to add another level of security. Security presentations in the dorms, Safety and Security Week and weekly crime prevention articles in the school newspaper all promote safety to York College students.

7. Are drugs and alcohol a problem at York College?

York College does not permit students to use or possess alcohol under the age of 21. Illegal drugs are absolutely prohibited on campus. This policy is regulated through the resident assistants in each housing facility.  Starting Fall 2009, there will be one upper-classman housing facility which will permit those students who are 21 or over to possess a certain quantity of alcohol.

8. Can I get a part-time job on campus?

There are many opportunities for part-time employment on campus and not all jobs on campus are limited to work-study students. There are also opportunities in the local area for part-time jobs. The Career Development Center can provide a listing of companies and organizations in the York area who have openings for part-time employment.

9. What type of religious services are available to students?

Protestant and Catholic services are offered at York College's Brougher Chapel, located directly on campus. In addition to regular services, special events are planned. For our Jewish students transportation can be obtained to attend the temple or synagogue located in York. Religious organizations include Hillel, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and the Newman Club.

10. How many students live in college housing?

Approximately 65% of the student body reside in some type of college housing or in the surrounding community. College housing includes traditional style residence halls, suites, apartments and college-owned homes on the perimeter of campus.

11. Is college housing guaranteed?

Freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus unless living with a parent or guardian. Beginning junior year, students may request to move off-campus. Most off-campus housing is conveniently located adjacent to campus. Students may live on campus all four years as long as the housing deposit is paid before the deadline.

12. Is there a curfew?

No, but the residence halls are locked at 1:00 A.M. Security will assist you in entering the residence halls after 1:00 AM.

13. What if I get sick?

The College Health Center always has a Registered Nurse available during office hours. The Nurse may triage the patient initially and then schedule with the physician or nurse practitioner as needed. The Center has scheduled hours and staff available seven days a week and has an on-call system for emergencies when the Center is not open.
