Scholarship Opportunities

York College offers financial assistance to students of African-American or Hispanic origin through various scholarships.

The Rev. Heywood G. Knight Memorial Scholarship
Rev. Heywood G. Knight, affectionately known as "Woody," was an active member of the York College community. For many years, Rev. Knight was an assistant professor in the English and Speech Department, also serving as the minority counselor and advisor to the former Afro-American Club. The legacy of his devotion to the College and its students continues with this scholarship. This fund was initiated through a bequest from the estate of Rev. Heywood G. Knight. Scholarships in the amount of $500 may be awarded to financially needy, full-time African-American YCP students who are members of the Unity Club and who maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5.

The Herbert M. Rehmeyer Minority Opportunity Scholarship Fund
This fund was established through a grant from the H. M. Rehmeyer trust and is available to African-American and Hispanic residents of York County who matriculate at York College of Pennsylvania. Concerned about the level of higher education participation among members of local minority communities, the College sought to further reduce perceived financial barriers through the creation of an endowed scholarship to assist local minority students. Scholarships may be awarded to entering freshmen students who show promise for achievement and to returning students who have maintained a minimum grade point average of 2.0.

The Monica Woodard Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by the Afro-American Club of York College of Pennsylvania in September 1979, the name of the club was later changed to the Unity Club. The purpose of the fund was and is to memorialize one of the Unity Club's most active and dedicated members and to inspire and aid a minority student in his or her pursuit of higher education. Scholarships may be awarded to any full-time, active members of the Unity Club who are in need of financial assistance and have maintained a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Also, any freshman who attained a secondary school average of 3.0 or better is eligible for an award.

WHTF Tim Drayer Scholarship Fund
The WHTF Tim Drayer Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Starview 92 radio personality Tim Drayer, who at the time of his death, was music director, assistant program director, and air personality for WHTF-FM. Station owner and president Douglas George initiated the fund through memorial contributions from listeners, the music and radio industries, and from the station itself. In creating the WHTF Tim Drayer Scholarship Fund, Mr. George intended to provide a permanent source of scholarship funds for African-American and Hispanic students pursuing an education at York College. Scholarships may be awarded to freshmen students who have attained a satisfactory secondary school average and show promise for achievement and to full-time upperclassmen who have maintained a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
