Spring on the York College campus

Graduate Level Internship Program

  • Counseling Services Mission Statement

Counseling Services is devoted to supporting the unique, holistic development of York College students by offering assessment, individual/group counseling, educational programming, consultation, crisis intervention and referrals in an ever-changing environment.  This array of services is offered in a welcoming, confidential and comfortable setting. Counseling Services collaborates with the campus and community to advance/support vocational, emotional, social and cultural development of all students.  These services help individuals resolve personal difficulties and acquire attitudes, abilities and knowledge that enable them to participate and contribute fully in their York College experience.

Counseling Services offers unpaid counseling internships for graduate students who are currently enrolled in the study of Clinical Counseling, Psychology, Community Mental Health or a similar course of study at an institution other than York College.

  • Summary of Intern Experience

York College Counseling Services is committed to being an instrument of education for the master’s level intern student.  The student is expected to demonstrate satisfactory progress in the following areas:  clinical skills, professionalism, knowledge and behavior reflective of ethical and legal standards and personal growth in the counseling setting.

The intern will have numerous opportunities over the course of 600+ hours (two semesters) to participate in individual, couple, family and possibly group counseling settings.  Outreach programs such as Alcohol Awareness, Depression Screenings, Eating Disorder Awareness and Stress Management Seminars are examples of a few programs the intern may participate in as a short-term member of the York College Counseling Services team.

By participating in this unpaid internship, an intern can expect to develop a working knowledge of problem definition, identifying interaction patterns, observation skills, hypotheses and intervention skills as well as setting therapeutic goals.  Weekly supervision and instruction will allow the intern to mature in the counseling setting in preparation for the post-graduate, professional setting.
