Spartan Shorts for April 4

Baseball

The Spartan baseball squad is off to a strong start with a 15-4 record. York is also 7-2 in the MAC Commonwealth, one-half game behind Messiah for the top spot in the league. The Spartan offense has been extremely prolific, as they lead the MAC Commonwealth in batting average (.354), runs (189), hits (244), doubles (61), RBI (175), total bases (363), slugging percentage (.527), and on-base percentage (.430). The Spartans are first in all of Division III in doubles per game (3.21), fourth in batting average, and 12th in runs scored per game (9.9 runs per game). 

Junior left fielder Chris Betler (Ellicott City, MD) is 13th in the country in batting average (.493), 20th in home runs (7), 22nd in RBI per game (1.63), and 27th in total RBI (31). He earned a pair of national honors for his play from March 11-17: a spot on the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week and recognition as the Division III Hitter of the Week from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as he hit .800 with eight runs scored, one double, five home runs, and 17 RBI in the four Spartan wins. Betler is the first Spartan to earn the NCBWA honor in the 20-year history of the award.

Softball

York College softball is 16-5 through 21 games this spring and tied for first in the MAC Commonwealth with a mark of 5-1 with five straight wins. The Spartans have been rolling offensively and lead the league in batting average (.349), runs scored (167), doubles (55), home runs (20), RBI (160), slugging percentage (.557), walks (84), on-base percentage (.432), and sacrifice flies (11).

Daphney Adams (Nazareth, PA), Gretchen Barstad (Joppa, MD), and Emma Wade (Hagerstown, MD) are the offensive cogs for the Spartans. Adams ranks third in the country in doubles, ninth in doubles per game, 12th in RBIs, fifth in sacrifice flies, and 18th in slugging percentage. Barstad is sixth in the nation in doubles, sixth in runs per game, and 16th in total bases. Wade is third nationally in home runs, second in RBI, and sixth in total bases.
