Field Hockey Earns First NCAA Tournament Bid
November 08, 2022For the first time in school history, the York College field hockey team will be participating in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Spartans earned one of eight at-large bids to the field after their 2022 MAC Commonwealth championship game appearance on Saturday.
The Spartans will host DeSales University in Wednesday's opening round of the tournament. The Bulldogs won the MAC Freedom tournament with a 3-2 victory over second seeded Arcadia. DeSales enters the tournament with a record of 15-4. The winner of Wednesday's first round game will advance to face overall top seed Salisbury University in Saturday's second round in Salisbury, Maryland.
The Spartans enter the NCAA tournament with a record of 15-5 as they finished second in the MAC Commonwealth in the regular season with a mark of 7-1. They advanced to their first Commonwealth title game before falling to #7 Messiah 2-0. York is currently ranked 13th according to the NFHCA Coaches Poll while Salisbury is #1. DeSales comes into the tournament unranked.
The Spartans played four teams that earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament including Salisbury as the Sea Gulls edged the Spartans 1-0 on October 5 in Salisbury.
