York College of PA Campus Safety, student EMS fundraise for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 05, 2022

York College of Pennsylvania’s Campus Safety Office and student-run EMS are wearing and selling pink patches throughout October to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Campus Safety participated in The Pink Patch Project last year and raised nearly $1,000 through the sale of collectible uniform patches. They will be joined in their efforts this year by York College EMS. Donations will go to a WellSpan breast cancer fund to assist local families.

“Our officers are wearing pink patches on their uniforms for the entire month of October,” said Campus Safety Director Ed Bruder. “We also have the pink patch displayed on one of our patrol vehicles.”

Patches are $10 and may be purchased at the Campus Safety Office in Manor Hall. Those interested may also contact Community Services Officer Chad Gleissl at cgleissl@ycp.edu. Gleissl has arranged for WellSpan’s Mobile Mammography to visit campus on Oct. 17. Those who want to set up a 15- to 20-minute screening appointment should call 717-466-2666 (717 GO-MAMMO) to register.

The student-run EMS is also on board with the fundraiser “because many of the participating agencies of the Pink Patch Project are police agencies, and there are a lot less EMS agencies,” said Brody Cain, Captain of York College EMS and a senior biology major from Shrewsbury. “We hope that by getting involved, more EMS agencies are aware of the Pink Patch Project and join the movement, furthering breast cancer research and education.

“Our hope is that by selling pink patches, we can promote breast cancer education by people associating the pink color with the breast cancer awareness and education movement. My paternal grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She died due to complications associated with it in March 1991. At the time, breast cancer research was still a novel concept. I hope research continues to advance exponentially so eventually, no family will have to hear that their loved one has died due to breast cancer – or any cancer for that matter.”

Contact Cain at bcain2@ycp.edu or 717-815-2234 to purchase a York College EMS patch.
