York College students who are veterans and active duty members enrolled in a first-year seminar are coordinating a Nov. 13 ruck to celebrate Veterans Day. A ruck is walking or running with a weighted backpack, a common practice in the military. Proceeds from the event, which begins at noon at the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center, will be donated to Roots for Boots, a nonprofit located in New Oxford, Pa., that serves veterans and their families. The event is open to the public.
"We are excited to hold our second annual 10K Ruck,” said Dr. Robyn Maitoza, chair of the Applied Behavioral Sciences Department who teaches the course, Boot Camp YCP Style. “Last year was a huge success. Not only did we have fun, but more importantly, we raised $1,000 for a local nonprofit that serves veterans. We look forward to exceeding that amount this year."
Registration is available on Eventbrite.com; cost is $20 prior to the event and $25 on the day of the event. Participants will leave from the Grumbacher Center and can choose a 5K or 10K route on the Rail Trail. Free t-shirts will be given to the first 50 registrants.
