Accelerated Nursing Clinicals and Career Preparation

A student nurse helping a patient get her wrist wrapped.

Hands-on experience in a real clinical setting.

The clinical experiences you’ll have in York College of Pennsylvania’s ABSN program will introduce you to the settings and practices of a career in nursing without extending your time in school. You’ll find opportunities to develop professional relationships, discover the specialties you enjoy working in, and remember the reason why you want to become a nurse in the first place: You love helping people.

In the accelerated nursing program, students complete clinical rotations in a variety of settings, including a final semester capstone clinical experience. In advance of the clinical components, students spend time with experienced faculty in York’s own simulation labs, practicing both procedural techniques as well as soft skills, like teamwork and communication, that are highly sought after by employers.

Learn How YCP Prepares Future Nurses

As an accelerated nursing student, choosing a program with clinical placements is essential. That’s because clinicals are an important way for future nurses to refine task and procedure-based skills, become patient-centered, and find a specialty in the field.

Under the supervision of established nursing professionals in the area’s top healthcare settings, students in York’s ABSN program practice everything from ethical decision-making to the technical abilities needed to effectively and professionally carry out the many functions of a nurse.

York’s ABSN clinical learning experiences acquaint students with real patients and reinforce skills through repetition in various areas of the profession. Depending on your placement and interests, you’ll become familiar with both general and specialized tasks:

  • Routine patient care
  • Non-patient care activities like administrative tasks and chart reading
  • Data collection techniques, both verbal and procedural
  • Administration of drugs
  • Care of chronic illnesses and acute health problems in adults and children
  • Patient and family interaction
  • Women’s health nursing
  • Community health nursing
  • Psychiatric/mental health nursing

In a clinical capstone project, ABSN students work with a faculty mentor and preceptor to engage with their future career path and demonstrate the learnings of the entire clinical experience.

Prior to the nursing clinical practicum, students must meet all progression requirements and complete requirements as outlined in the Nursing Student Handbook, including:

  • Physical examinations and immunization requirements
  • Completed CPR certification
  • Health insurance coverage requirements

The specific requirements that apply to your assigned clinical location will be communicated to you individually as the practicum semester approaches.

Nursing Simulation Labs

In addition to the experience you gain in our clinical affiliation locations, each course you take in the ABSN program incorporates time in York’s simulation labs and on-campus nursing facilities.

Our simulated clinical experiences allow students to become confident in various aspects of nursing prior to treating actual patients. Faculty guide students in simulated situations that might not arise during clinical rotations, ensuring full preparation for any nursing position you pursue after graduation.
