The Department of Campus Safety employs several student security officers each year. This part-time position* is open to students of any major — so you don't need a background in law enforcement or criminal justice. Student officers typically work in five-hour shifts, three or four days per week. Duties include:

  • Foot Patrol of Campus Facilities, Grounds, and Parking Lots
  • Safety Escorts (Walking) for Students and Employees
  • Security Checks of Facilities and Grounds
  • Call Box Inspections
  • Fire Alarm Assistance
  • Traffic/Parking Control for Events
  • General Crime Prevention

*This role is not part of the Work Study program.

Student Security Officers wear distinctive clothing that clearly identifies them as Student Security. During their shift, Student Security Officers are also in direct radio contact with Campus Dispatchers and Campus Police Officers.

Student Security Officers may be enrolled in any major, but they must be committed to their primary academic education and maintain good grades. 

Student employees must also exemplify the Department of Campus Safety's values:

Applicants to Student Security Officer positions must consent to a background check, and due to the potential exposure to confidential and sensitive information and material, all employees are required to sign a confidentiality non-disclosure agreement.

Student Security Officers engage in a wealth of résumé-building experience, including supervisory experience and on-the-ground training.

Student officers have the opportunity to test for Corporal after two years (requiring a favorable performance evaluation, written exam, and oral board).  Promotion from Corporal to Sergeant includes a situational oral board.

Successful student officers/supervisors have gone on to pursue rewarding career opportunities after graduating from York College. Our graduates include law enforcement officials within local, state, and federal agencies, as well as the military.

Hiring for Student Security Officer positions typically occurs during the summer months. After selection, recruits will attend a one-week course just prior to the start of the fall semester.
