Accommodations for Non-Native English Speakers
YCP provides support resources and accommodations for students whose first language is not English. Students struggling with courses and assignments because of English language fluency may request the following to support their academic success:
- 50% extra time on tests/exams
- Use of Read & Write to help with translation
- Recording of class lectures
Criteria
Students who meet the following criteria will be eligible to utilize accommodations for Non-Native English Speakers:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score: 78 or below
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score: 5.0 overall band score
- Duolingo English Test (DET) score: 94 or below
- Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) score: 57 or below
- Global Test of English Communication (GTEC) score: 1189 or below
All scores are below the stated required minimum scores for international student admission.
If you have not taken any of these tests before requesting accommodations, we encourage you to take the Duolingo English Test.

Other Support For Non-English Speakers
Writing tutors are available to help all students, including non-native English speakers, with all aspects of their writing, including understanding an assignment, following the norms of American academic discourse, and editing and proofreading their writing. Non-native English speakers might most benefit from in-person or Zoom appointments with tutors to support their needs.
All students, including non-native English speakers might struggle to adjust to the expected reading load of college, or struggle with technical or scholarly sources. Academic coaches are available to support reading and reading comprehension.
The Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion (SDI) has several resources, including cultural student organizations like the Hispanic Culture Society and Unity. The SDI Office also provides support and resources for international students to help them transition smoothly to life at York College and to have a successful and memorable experience in the United States.
